ACCEPTANCE AND COMMITMENT THERAPY (ACT)

At Psyche Therapy Centre we are proud to provide Acceptance and Commitment Therapy both online and at our centre in Glasgow. We wanted to share more about what this powerful therapy modality is and what it can do for you.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is based on the idea it is normal for humans to experience uncomfortable thoughts and emotions. Trying to get rid of these only leads to more suffering so we have to accept our thoughts and emotions. We should also commit to actions in line with their values. ACT was developed as an alternative to traditional therapies focused on changing a person’s thoughts and behaviours. In this post we will explore ACT, its benefits, and how it can help improve mental health.

What are the benefits of ACT:
  1. Increased Psychological Flexibility: This allows us adapt to different situations and accept difficult thoughts and emotions. It helps people develop psychological flexibility by teaching them mindfulness and acceptance skills. Mindfulness involves paying attention to the present moment, without judgement, while acceptance involves acknowledging and accepting difficult thoughts and emotions. By developing these skills, people become more flexible in their thinking and behaviour, leading to greater resilience and well-being.
  2. Greater Acceptance of Self: This form of therapy will encourage you to accept yourself and your imperfections. This improves self-esteem as you will learn to value yourself for who you are. Acceptance helps people develop a more positive relationship with thoughts and emotions which can reduce feelings of shame and self-criticism.
  3. Improved Mental Health: ACT has been shown as effective in treating various issues, including depression, anxiety, addiction, and chronic pain. In a meta-analysis of 39 studies, ACT was found as effective as traditional cognitive-behavioural therapies in treating these.
  4. Enhanced Relationships: ACT can improve relationships, encouraging people to be present in interactions with others and communicate more effectively. By being more present, people can develop deeper connections with others and better understand their needs and perspectives. Effective communication skills can also help people resolve conflicts and build stronger, more meaningful relationships.
  5. Increased Values-Based Living: ACT helps people identify their values and commit to actions in line with those values. By living according to their values, people can develop a greater sense of purpose and meaning in life. This can help them overcome obstacles and setbacks and feel more fulfilled and satisfied.
