Somatic Therapy: Glasgow and remote

What Is Somatic Therapy?

Somatic experiencing therapy supports mental and emotional health using the mind-body connection and releasing stress, tension, and trauma from the body. It allows you to think about the physical sensations that underline your mental and emotional ones. It explores how the body expresses deeply painful experiences, applying mind-body healing to aid with trauma recovery.

Rather than a traditional talking therapy centred primarily on the mind, this therapy style uses body-centric modalities. This can include dance, breathwork, meditation, movement, and mind-body exercises. A somatic approach can be used integratively, meaning it can be combined with forms of talking therapy.

How can Somatic Therapy help? :

Traditional talk therapies, such as Person-Centred Therapy or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, engage only the mind, not the body. They work from the mind outwards, asking you to identify thoughts and behaviours patterns and change them which can then improve physical experiences.

Using a somatic approach, we start with the body as the starting point to achieve both physical and emotional healing. This therapy modality creates a focus on bodily sensations, teaching you how to feel safe in your body so you are able to explore your thoughts, emotions, and memories.
